Project NDF 146/177

Draining and processing of sodium coolant as part of the general process of shutting down the BN-350 fast neutron reactor in Kazakhstan

Customer and Funding side

US Department of State’s Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Fund

Objective of the Pproject:

Drainage and processing of the liquid metal coolant of the BN-350 reactor to bring it into a safe state. Construction of the Sodium Processing Facility.

Work performed:

The first contract of NDF 146 was signed in February 2001. The second contract of NDF 177 was signed in September 2003.

Sodium of the first circuit of the BN-350 reactor was successfully shredded. The project for handling sodium residues of the first and second circuits was developed and approved. Designed and built a plant for processing sodium primary circuit, performed commissioning. The implementation of the project allowed the reactor facility to be brought to a safer condition.

Status of the Project:

Both projects were completed and closed in February 2009.
