Support to Atomic Energy Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Almaty, Kazakhstan, November 12-16, 2001.

The representatives of U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC), Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Committee MEMR RK (KAEC), Scientech, Inc. company, MEGA-TECH company, Nuclear Technology Safety Center (NTSC), KazAtomProm, NNC RK, MAEC, KATEP and VolkovGeologiya and other Kazakhstani enterprises have participated in this meeting.

The meeting was devoted to realization of the Agreement between the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRÑ) and the Atomic Energy Committee of the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Trade of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KAEC) for the Exchange of Technical Information and Cooperation in Nuclear Safety Matters (December 20, 1999) as well as the works by the contract between SCIENTECH company and NTSC in the network of this Agreement.

In accordance with the agenda of the meeting the following was done:

(1) NTSC and SCIENTECH reported to US NRC and KAEC about their activities since May, 2001;

(2) one presented the first results on development of Kazakhstani regulations for disposal of low/ intermediate level wastes, the preliminary conception of documents regulating the processing low/ intermediate level wastes, as well as the preliminary conceptions of documents regulating the processing, storage and disposal of mixed wastes of radioactive sodium;

(3) the working groups discussed in detail the interim results;

(4) the process of the regulatory document development as well as the scheme of participant interactions were discussed;

(5) the KAEC document review process was discussed;

(6) the plan of further activities in 2002 was discussed.
